Cheese at the ChainsSupermarkets tend to devote most of their cheese display space to the "value added" products, the shredded or grated "cheese foods", often pre-seasoned, that you can add to your tortilla chips or pasta or pre-fabricated pizza shell for a near-instant meal. But the dairy cases still hold a decent selection of real cheddar cheese. It may not be the carriage trade product cheese specialty stores dispense, but supermarket cheddar cheese, in its unadulturated form, is a tasty, nuitritious and quality product, representing excellent value. This week Shop Rite's store brand, in mild, sharp and extra sharp versions, goes for $4 for two 10-ounce packages ($3.20 a pound). That's less expensive that most American "cheese food" products. Pathmark's 32-ounce packages of sharp are going for $6.99, or $3.50 a pound. The biggest cheddar savings I could uncover are at Wegman's in Downingtown where the Helluva Good brand, from upstate New York, is advertised at $2.99 a pound with the chain's card. Local Stone Fruits DisappearingDon't expect to see Jersey peaches at your local supermarket too much loinger. They've already disappeared from Whole Foods, and the price is rising elsewhere. Jersey peaches at Genuardi's and Pathmark have hit $1.49. Shop Rite isn't even including them in its weekly circular and instead touts California nectarines. Whole Foods Avocados remain pricey at $2.99. The specimens Whole Foods offer are a little bigger than the ones at Iovine's at the Reading Terminal, the price is three times more. Trader Joe's
Reports? I haven't been to the new TJ outlet in Center City yet. If anyone cares to give me their opinions, e-mail me. |

Unless otherwise noted, prices are per pound,
and all reports and comments are based on personal
visits. Prices, of course, are subject to wild fluctuation, and what's here
today at 49 cents may be unavailable at any price tomorrow. So don't sue me
if you don't see it at the price quoted here, because it will cost you
lawyers' fees. If you have a report you'd like to add, or any comments about the usefulness (or lack thereof) of this site, just contact me. I would particularly welcome reports on the various small farmer markets around the city and nearby suburbs. If you would like to receive an e-mail to notify you when updated reports are available, just contact me. |
