South & Passyunk Paw Paws. Earl Livengood had them Saturday at the Reading Terminal, and will probably offer them this week at South & Passyunk. They'll only be available for another week or two. As to what to do with them, check out the Paw Paw Patch. Heirloom tomatos. Fading fast, though some varieties are available at Paul & Carol Hauser's and Earl Livengood's. Price, though, remains stable at $2-$2.50 a pound. Head News. The cruciferous vegetables are starting to arrive. This week at Livengood's there were gigantic heads of perfect-looking cauliflowers. Cool weather greens are also emerging. Livengood's had red, white and yellow Swiss chard, all with small, tender stalks, and turnip greens with tiny turnips attached. Also in Livengood's garden bucket this week: garlic bulbs, red and green sweet peppers, winter squash (see photo) and summer squash. This Week's Apples. At Hausers, Cortland, MacIntosh, Smokehouse and Galas. $2 for a container holding about 8 medium fruits, $3.50 for twice that much. |

Unless otherwise noted, prices are per pound,
and all reports and comments are based on personal
visits. Prices, of course, are subject to wild fluctuation, and what's here
today at 49 cents may be unavailable at any price tomorrow. So don't sue me
if you don't see it at the price quoted here, because it will cost you
lawyers' fees. If you have a report you'd like to add, or any comments about the usefulness (or lack thereof) of this site, just contact me. I would particularly welcome reports on the various small farmer markets around the city and nearby suburbs. If you would like to receive an e-mail to notify you when updated reports are available, just contact me. |
